The Sundarbans are the largest mangrove forest in the world, covering the border region between Bangladesh and India.  It is a unique point of biodiversity, rich in natural diversity. Sundarbans is a vast forest in the Division of Khulna, in Bangladesh, located in the coastal region of the Ganges Delta, along the Bay of Bengal.  It is one of the natural wonders of the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous as a Tiger-de-Bengal sanctuary.  Esta floresta parece embracer o ambiente natural.

Location of the Sundarbans

The Sundarbans in Bangladesh are located in the southwestern part of the country. Of the approximately 10,000 square kilometers of forest, 6,517 square kilometers (66%) of this forest is in Bangladesh. It is located in the Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Patuakhali and Barguna districts of the country. The Sundarbans cover 1,874 square kilometers of rivers and wetlands.


This article covers three wildlife sanctuaries in Khulna division, which include the Sundarbans South Wildlife Sanctuary, the Sundarbans East Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sundarbans West Wildlife Sanctuary. The Indian part is in the Sundarbans (West Bengal) article.

Diverse Biodiversity:


Tiger: The world-famous Royal Bengal Tiger is the main attraction of this forest.


Deer, monkeys, crocodiles, wild cats, etc. are also found.


Birds and reptiles: There are a large number of rare birds and snakes.


Forest plants: Goran, Gewa, Sundari tree (from which the name of the Sundarbans is derived) are among them.


Rivers and canals:

Numerous rivers and canals flow through the Sundarbans, which help in sustaining the ecosystem of this forest.


Importance of the Sundarbans:


Natural barrier: Protects the coastal area from cyclones and tidal waves.


Habitat for biodiversity.


Honey collection and fishing: Source of livelihood of the local people.


Tourism: Tourists from different countries of the world come to see this forest.

Sundarbans Tiger – Royal Bengal Tiger


The Sundarbans tiger is the world-famous Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris). It is not only the national animal of Bangladesh, but also one of the most important and well-known symbols of the biodiversity of the Sundarbans.


Tiger Size: Male tigers are on average 8-10 feet tall, weighing about 180-250 kg.


Movement: Lives alone, has its own territory.


Prey: Chitra deer, wild boar, monkeys, etc.


Swimming in water: Sundarbans tigers are adept at moving in water, this is their special feature.


 Characteristics of the Sundarbans tiger that distinguish it from tigers in other places:


Water tolerance: They can easily move through tidal water. Slightly smaller body: The Sundarbans tiger is slightly smaller than other tigers. Tiger Census: Tigers were counted in the Sundarbans in 2015 and 2018 through camera traps.


SMART Patrolling: Forest guards conduct technology-based surveillance. World Tiger Day: Celebrated on July 29 every year for the purpose of tiger conservation.

Health Indicators of the Sundarbans - If there are tigers, it means that the forest is in good condition. Tourist Attraction - Many tourists come in the hope of seeing tigers.

Many natural parks have been established around the Sundarbans in Bangladesh, such as:

 1 Jamtala Sea Beach. There is an observation tower in Jamtala, from this tower you can see some of the beauty of the Sundarbans. And if you are lucky, you can see deer or tigers from here. 

2 Mandarbaria Beach. Some parts of Mandarbaria Sea Beach are still considered unexplored. Sunrise and sunset can be seen from here. 

3 Hiran Point. Deer, monkeys, guisap and crocodiles can be seen while walking on the beautiful wooden road of Hiran Point. Bengal tigers can also be seen here occasionally. 

4 Dublar Char. Dublar Char is a small char in the Sundarbans area. The river flowing through Dublar Char merges with the Bay of Bengal. 

5 Katka Sea Beach (Katka Sea Beach). Katka Sea Beach is very clean and beautiful.  Here, the artwork of red crabs is painted all over the beach. 

6 Harbaria Eco-Tourism Center, Chandpai Range, Sundarbans, Bagerhat. This center is located 70 kilometers from Khulna and about 12 kilometers from Mongla Port. 

Karamjal Tourism Center (about eight kilometers from Mongla Sea Port). The tourism center has been developed under the supervision of the Forest Department. There are various species of animals and birds here, including crocodiles, deer, rhesus monkeys. There are also wooden trails and towers. The fishermen's fishing activities are an additional attraction at this tourist center. The only natural breeding center of crocodiles in Bangladesh is located in Karamjal.
