History of Cox's Bazar
History From the early 9th century until the Mughal conquest in 1616, a large part of Chittagong, including Cox's Bazar, was part of the Arakan Kingdom. Mughal Emperor Shah Shuja was impressed by the natural beauty of Cox's Bazar on his way to Arakan via the mountain road and ordered a camp to be set up here. About a thousand palanquins of his expedition were stationed at a place called Dulahajara in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar. Dulahajara means a thousand palanquins. After the Mughals, Tripura and Arakan, and then the Portuguese and the British took control of this area.
The name Cox's Bazar comes from the name of a British East India Company officer named Captain Hiram Cox. The previous name of Cox's Bazar was Palanki. After the issuance of the British East India Company Ordinance, 1773, Warrant Hosting was appointed as the Governor of Bengal. Hiram Cox was then appointed Director General of Palanki. Captain Cox tried to resolve the thousand-year-old conflict between the Arakan refugees and the local Rakhines. And made significant progress in the resettlement of the refugees, but died (1799) before the work was fully completed. To commemorate his rehabilitation contribution, a market was established and named Cox Saheb's Market. Cox's Bazar police station was first established in 1854 and the municipality was formed in 1869.
Many institutions have been established here focusing on the tourism industry. In addition to many hotels built by private enterprises, motels built by the Bangladesh Tourism Corporation, there are a few five-star hotels near the beach. In addition, a mussel market has been established here for tourists. On the border route, a Burmese market has been established with exotic goods from countries such as Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), Thailand, and China.
Cox's Bazar is home to various tribes or ethnic groups, which has made the city more diverse. The Chakma community is the main one among these tribes. There are Buddhist temples in Cox's Bazar city and nearby Ramu, which are sacred pilgrimage sites for Buddhists. The temple in Cox's Bazar city has several rare Buddhist statues. These temples and statues are one of the main attractions and focal points for tourists. Cox's Bazar has not only the sea, but also a river called Bankkhali. This river is quite important for the city's fishing industry. Cox's Bazar is famous as the healthiest place in Bangladesh.
